What are we learning?

English: The core text for the Autumn 1 half-term is The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. We will retell the story and focus on past tense verbs.

Maths: In Maths we will focus on counting in ones, twos, fives, tens. We will also learn how to sort objects and form groups in different ways. We follow the White Rose planning and support the children's mathematical reasoning using manipulatives (objects such as counters, tens frames, base ten rods, dice, place value counters...) and through pictures in nearly all of the number work we do.

Science: We are learning about the seasons and the weather and how to identify signs of summer, spring, autumn and winter in nature.

Humanities: Our History and Geography topic for this half-term is Seaside Holidays. We will be looking into how the seaside in the UK has changed from the Victorian times until now and how it has stayed the same. We will look into maps and atlases to support our understanding of the coastal geographical elements in this topic.

Music: We follow the Charanga scheme of work which supports the children and the staff to deliver great music lessons. This half-term children will be learning how to identify the pulse, the rhythm and the pitch in a variety of musical genres.

RE: We are learning about what makes someone special.

PSHE: We are learning how to settle back into school, what the expectations are from our headteacher, teachers and LSAs regarding classroom behaviours, playtimes and lunch times. We are also focusing on how to express our emotions using the Zones of Regulation and how to show a Growth Mindset.

PE Information

Year 1/2 have PE on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please remember to send your child to school in their PE kit so that you are ready for the lesson. Long hair must be tied back, earrings taped and any other additional jewelry removed to avoid accidents.

Reading is the only homework assigned to Year 1 and Year 2 children in the Autumn 1 half-term in KS1.

Please encourage your child to READ as often as possible. Every day they read they will be rewarded with Dojo/ House points. The more your child reads, it will enable them to implement their phonics knowledge and in turn will assist them to progress and become fluent readers. The children are assigned banded books following the Little Wandle Phonics program and also a library 'reading for pleasure book' every week. The Little Wandle book is for the children to read to the parents and improve how they sound out and blend the words according to their level. The 'reading for pleasure' book is for parents to read with or to their children so they can improve their reading comprehension skills and knowledge of the world as well as building a love for reading and learning. Reading is a great way to spend some enjoyable time with your child!
