Physical Education

Intent

West Wycombe School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We aim to inspire all children to lead a healthy and physically active lifestyle, and to promote the benefits of exercise for mental health. We want the children’s experience of PE to be positive so they are motivated to continue healthy habits as they proceed though school, and life. We want them to succeed and reache their full potential. We want to develop both physical attributes and a range of skills to ensure they are confident leading an active lifestyle in a range of activities, and expose them to competitive sport to aid the development of values such as fairness and respect, and character qualities such as resilience and compassion.

Implementation

Children will receive 2 hours of PE a week with specialist coaches or class teachers. Each half term children will be taught a different activity, and across the weeks they will develop the skills required to participate in the sport/activity effectively, with the aim of building towards small sided games/routines/performances. All competitive sessions run in school are inclusive so not to effect the confidence and general well-being of children who may not possess the physical and sporting attributes of others. Across the year children will have covered all aspects of the sporting curriculum. Children also have the chance to be active in lunch clubs funded by the school, and privately run clubs after school.

Our delivery ensures:

  • Maximum participation at all times
  • As much movement and skill work as possible
  • Quality sessions that build skills week on week
  • Development of motor-skills, movement skills and ABCs (agility, balance and co-ordination)
  • Progression to games and an understanding of basic rules
  • Sessions are fun, engaging, challenging and accessible to all
  • Progression and regression of different groups of children depending on ability
  • Development of values and positive sporting attitudes
  • Development of speaking and listening skills, and general confidence.
  • Understanding of PE vocabulary and knowledge to aid transition into KS3 and further.

Impact

PE is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a age-appropriate, broad and balanced curriculum in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A well planned, high-quality inclusive physical education curriculum, with clear progression of skills and knowledge, inspires all children to succeed and excel in sport and other physically-demanding activities, which are broad and balanced. The sessions delivered by Complete Sports Ltd provides opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Children are assessed in each activity delivered at the end of each half term to monitor their progress.
